How accurate is Onx Hunt Maps and Is it Worth Using?
Online maps have become the new paper maps of the 21st century; they help people get from one place to another.
Onx Hunt has become very popular in the United States and other parts of the world, thanks to its accuracy and timely updates.
In fact, it has been recognized as one of the most accurate map apps that are currently available on the market. But How good are they when it comes to accuracy?
And how frequently do they update their maps? Do they have a history of providing accurate GPS location data, or are they just as bad as other map apps out there?
Is onX hunt good?
Apps like onX hunt are great because they put maps and other key hunting tools right at your fingertips. Think of them as a more convenient, mobile version of Google Earth.
As you explore, make sure to note whether or not features on your device match what you’re seeing in real life. The more familiar you are with landmarks, vegetation, and terrain patterns in your area, the easier it will be to tell if something looks off.
For example, notice that a particular trail appears much wider in real life than it does on-screen? Chances are you need to take a new route. Or that there’s a tree blocking your path that shouldn’t be there?
My Personal opinion about How accurate is onx Hunt Maps
My experience with Onx maps has been good.
You will never be completely satisfied with how things look on a map, but for me, Onx maps are pretty spot-on.
However, I have never had any issues finding my destination when using them.
I’ve heard from a few people who say that they sometimes have issues with street names, which makes sense because street names are notoriously difficult to get right in every place you go—not just cities.
These problems are rare and don’t cause any real harm, so I wouldn’t let it scare you away from using their maps!
If you decide to use Onx maps and experience an issue like that one time, please tell them in comments section. Will update this article
Overall in my option the data is accurate if you ask us How accurate is Onx Hunt Maps
What do red dots on onX mean?
The red dot on onX maps signifies public land. Some states have more public land than others.
Montana, for example, has a lot of red dots because there’s a lot of public land in Montana.
For you travelers out there, these are also your best chances for that secluded campsite—as long as you know where to look.
There are other map companies out there and some don’t even show public land.
So, if you want to go off-grid with no cell service and no internet access, use onX Hunt Maps so you can find remote areas quickly.
How Reliable Is Onx Maps?
As with any tool, it’s important to understand its limitations.
Despite being a powerful tool with a lot of potential, Onx doesn’t always get it right if you ask How accurate is onx Hunt Maps.
The maps aren’t always precise or up-to-date, and can be hindered by bad satellite reception.
However, in our experience they were pretty reliable and helped us out of more than one sticky situation.
Are Onx Maps Worth?
There’s no doubt that Onx maps are one of a kind, but they aren’t exactly cheap.
A map package can run you up to $100 per month and that’s without additional fees for traffic updates or points of interest.
So, if you do a lot of driving for work, it might be worth checking out Onx maps.
Otherwise, there are plenty of alternative mapping services out there like Garmin and Waze.
Both offer more than enough to help you navigate. Plus, most smartphones have built-in mapping apps that provide voice navigation too!
Where does onX get its information?
The data onX uses to power its hunt maps comes from three major sources: public, government datasets; private business listings; and crowd-sourced map information.
Public and government datasets are easy to use and available for anyone to download.
Private business listings, also called proprietary data, are typically not accessible by everyone; however, they can be extremely valuable because they provide up-to-date information about individual businesses.
OnX does not accept free listings from any business — it only accepts paid listings that ensure their information will be accurate and up-to-date.
And lastly, crowd sourced maps allow members of the community to add new locations or report changes at existing locations when they are traveling in areas where data coverage may be limited.
What do blue dots mean on onX
The blue dot represents a location that has been geo-tagged by our members. The dot will appear in different places on your map depending on how you search for it.
On your map, you can click or tap any of these dots to see where they are located and what tags have been added to them.
You can add additional information to any point by placing a marker directly above it (press and hold) then moving your finger around until you’ve outlined a rectangle representing an area of interest (you can zoom in or out).
Once created, release your finger from the screen and all points within that square will be highlighted with blue marker(s) letting you know that anything written below will apply to all those points as well.
Why are onX maps dark?
We’ve received a few requests from customers who find that their maps are not displaying in dark mode, so we wanted to shed some light (pun intended) on our dark theme.
Dark theme was added as an option for all of our users but it only applies to map tiles rendered by Mapbox.
If you happen to be using OpenStreetMap or some other map provider, there is no native support for dark mode and therefore you will always see your maps in normal mode.
We want to emphasize that while dark mode has its benefits (such as being easier on your eyes), it also makes objects like roads and trails harder to read against their backgrounds because they simply do not contrast well with street textures, park areas, etc.
Who are onXmaps’s main competitors?
OnXmaps’s main competitors are ISL Engineering, Lingtu, iMindQ, and National Atlas.
All of these companies aim to make maps and data more accessible for hikers.
Other big players include GaiaGPS, USGS and ViewRanger.
MapBox also offers similar services but provides access to a much broader range of free maps and location-based information than OnXmaps does.
Like OnXmaps, it displays routes as well as other critical elements like landmarks and elevations along trails or roads.
How often does onX update their satellite maps?
The company updates its maps weekly, which means you’ll always have up-to-date information at your fingertips as you go throughout your day.
It also allows for excellent real-time traffic updates, weather alerts, and details about nearby gas stations.
Whether you use onX in your car or with a smartphone app, it’s convenient to have such reliable data available—especially if you commute often.
It’s also worth noting that not all navigation apps are created equal:
While other apps update their maps monthly or quarterly, it’s definitely more convenient to have more frequent information available whenever you need it!
Can you track friends on onX?
Yes, you can!
If your friend has been previously found through a tracking device like Strava or Google Fit, you can tap Map My Friends from their profile page and drag a button over to them.
Or, if you’ve downloaded their workout from Garmin Connect, you’ll be able to add them to your list without even finding them in-app.
Similarly, if they have allowed tracking from within onX Mobile, you’ll also be able to tap into live data as it comes in.
It’s a great way for friends who are working out together to share data in real time and make sure they’re both hitting their goals—even if they’re not right next to each other at all times.
What are the dotted lines on OnX Hunt?
The dotted lines seen on some road maps represent dirt and gravel roads. The solid lines represent paved roads.
All road types have been updated to reflect Google’s most recent aerial imagery.
For each road, you can easily determine its surface by checking its color–dirt/gravel roads are brown, paved roads are orange, and railroad tracks are gray.
Clicking what’s here? reveals useful information about a location, including details about landmarks and nearby businesses.
You can also use Street View for a detailed look at buildings, such as entrances or addresses, in addition to streets surrounding them.

A Brief Comparison Between Google Maps and Onx Hunt
If you’re planning a trip to an unfamiliar place, there are two apps you’ll likely be using: Google Maps and Onx Hunt.
Both have their pros and cons, but they generally serve different purposes.
For example, while Google Maps can tell you how to get from point A to point B (where A and B might be two distant countries), Onx Hunt shows real-time results for any location or category of places nearby. The catch with using either service?
They may sometimes send you down roads that are closed for construction or other reasons, causing severe delays.
How do these services compare when it comes to accuracy?. How accurate is onx Hunt Maps ?
Let’s take a look at each one separately.
One such app is Google Maps.
This map is highly recommended by just about everyone; after all, it’s free, easy to use and available in most smartphones.
But there are downsides as well.
When you search for a location on Google Maps, say your hotel in Hawaii where you want to spend your holiday, or your favourite restaurant in Paris, if that business doesn’t already pay them money as part of some advertisement package then chances are you won’t find it!
If they do have an ad deal with Google then their listing will appear at the top of your search results but only if they have paid enough money to be listed above other businesses who haven’t paid up. So why does any of that matter?
Because when you arrive at your destination and need to find somewhere to eat dinner or stay overnight, you may end up having wasted precious time driving around looking for something which may not even exist because it was never listed on Google Maps in the first place.
The alternative option is Onx Hunt.
Do you wonder How accurate is Onx Hunt Maps?
Onx Hunt actually shows real-time information from people who have been there before including directions from their homes (using GPS) so they can tell you exactly how long it takes them to get there and what roads they take etc.
